ARE YOU FEEDING YOUR PLANTS AT THE RIGHT TIME—OR ARE YOU WASTING FERTILIZER? 🌱
Welcome to Growing With Charles Malki — Podcast Episode 4!
I’m Charles Malki, co-founder of IV Organic and host of the IV Organic YouTube channel.
In this episode, we’re digging into one of the most important—and often misunderstood—aspects of gardening:
🌱 PLANT NUTRITION & PLANT METABOLISM
Most gardeners know about N-P-K (Nitrogen, Phosphorus & Potassium), but did you know that plants require an entire spectrum of nutrients to grow, flower, produce fruit, and remain healthy?
IN THIS EPISODE, WE EXPLORE:
🌿 Why N-P-K is only the beginning
🌿 The importance of calcium, magnesium, sulfur, and essential micronutrients
🌿 How plant nutrition compares to human nutrition
🌿 Why MAY is one of the most important times of the year to feed your plants
🌿 Why spring and fall applications should generally be reduced
🌿 Why winter fertilizing can result in poor absorption and increased runoff
🌿 How foliar feeding can help provide nutrients when root uptake is limited
🌿 Why foliar feeding can be particularly valuable for citrus and other evergreen/tropical-type plants
🌿 How proper nutrition can help prepare your plants for maximum flowering and fruit production
And we’ll discuss an important concept:
PLANTS DON'T JUST NEED “FOOD”—THEY NEED THE RIGHT NUTRIENTS, IN THE RIGHT AMOUNTS, AT THE RIGHT TIME.
Just like humans need a variety of vitamins and minerals, plants require a complete nutritional profile to thrive.
🍊 FEED YOUR PLANTS… AND THEY’LL FEED YOU!

OUR MOST Frequently Asked Questions:
0:35 -- Q: What is the difference between IV Organic® 3-in-1 Plant Guard & IV Organic® White Wash products?
A: The 3-in-1 (Yellow Label) has 7 natural oils, including castor, cinnamon, clove, garlic, peppermint, rosemary and spearmint oils, which naturally repel most insects and rodents. The 3-in-1 benefits are: (1) sunburn (Summer Sunburn, Winter Sunscald), (2) Insect Repellent, and (3) Rodent Repellent. The WhiteWash (Blue Label) is oil-free. The primary function of this product is protection from sunburn, Summer Sunburn and Winter Sunscald. Both products have diatomaceous earth which offer some pest repellent protection.
______
2:11 -- Q: IV Organic® 3-in-1 Plant Guard & IV Organic® White Wash products are available in many colors, including: white, brown, green, grey & greige. Does it matter which color is used?
A: Color white naturally reflects the most light & heat. White is also the most popular selling color. However, if aesthetics is important as well, IV Organic® has several colors available to best match your tree’s trunk & lower branches. All colors offer protection from damaging summer sunburn & winter sunscald.
______
3:10 -- Q: What is the difference between IV Organic® All Purpose Fertilizers, Super Blend & Premium Blend?
A: Both organic fertilizers offer plants ALL 6 MacroNutrients that ALL plants need: Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K), Magnesium (Mg), Sulfur (S), Calcium (Ca); plus many MicroNutrients. Other brands only focus on N-P-K. ‘Super Blend’ (Yellow Label) has a higher percentage of N-P-K (3-3-3) PLUS Azomite® (crushed volcanic rock) which offers plants many MicroNutrients too! ‘Premium Blend’ (Blue Label) has a lower percent of N-P-K (2-2-2) and offers a more competitive price to get ALL 6 MacroNutrients to your plants.
_____
4:49 -- Q: When should I fertilize my plants & trees?
A: Generally, you should be feeding (fertilizing) your plants during the growing seasons of Spring, Summer & early Fall. Apply the fertilizer in granular form typically offers 60-90 days of food with each watering. Applying the fertilizer in liquid form typically offers 2-3 weeks of food, and should be repeated every 2-4 weeks. Potted plants should be fertilized more frequently, as the nutrients are leached out between waterings—So, a monthly application for potted plants during the growing season typically works best. Another helpful tip is to apply less fertilizer to your plants, but more frequently, if you have the time – As most commercial growers & nurseries. Winter time is a great time to foliar feed your tropical and every green plants, as roots are predominately dormant and cold, foliar feeding is a great way to get the nutrients plants need into the plant to improve its tolerance to weather extremes, quickly correct nutrient deficiencies and maximum productivity (blooms, fruits and growth) come the following spring. IV Organic® All Purpose Fertilizer can be used in multiple ways, including, granular soil feed, foliar feed and/ or compost tea—detail directions on the back label.
